Day 1/2: Thursday/Friday 2.09.10

"She never told me, she was leaving She left on a..." Thursday...

semi-overcast

Okay, typically I have not started my diary on day one and as a result the last few days have rolled into one and I'm writing this diary entry a few days late. I am finding this a bit of a struggle but here we go.

Having already sai bye to dad the other night, and after getting up early its time to head off to the train station and say bye to mum and kathryn! Feel awful after leaving them at the train station (more so mum) because I am so eager to get to Kenya and I feel guilty for not being more upset. :S I guess its because I've been booked on this trip for so long and I just wanted to crack on with thins. On the train I am feeling very nervous about meeting everyone but I cant even get my head round actually being in Kenya so the long distance doesn't really bother me. The worst that happens on the train is a small child kicking me and I'm really grateful about this....as we all know I have the 'travel curse'. Upon arrival at Kings Cross I make my way across London on the underground (sweating! one bag on the front and one on the back,) to London Paddington where I catch the Heathrow express. I am always very proud of myself getting on the underground without really using the map! Before I can think I'm at Heathrow airport specifically terminal four and I have a few hours to kill before everyone arrives. Cafe rouge seems like a good idea and I scoff more food there. So today I've had about four meals already and its only about 1.00.am What a fatty!

A few of my groups mobile numbers were emailed to me before I left and I decide I should bite the bullet and give some people a text to see whos arrived. Luckily Kiera texts back. Soon after that everybody else arrives and its wierdly easy to talk to everyone. I'm keeping in the crazy for now but who knows it may come out soon. Time blurs into one after this consisting of a little drink in the airport, lots of food, two flights (Heathrow-Nairobi-Mombassa), a pinch of sleep and Nadia from Australia meeting us in Mombassa. Her bag has gone missing but she is very upbeat!

When we exit Mombassa airport its pretty daunting with lots of drivers shouting at us and to be honest we are pretty confused as to who is our guy but then I recognise the Camp Kenya logo on a guys t-shirt and we all follow him in the direction of what we think are two mini buses....we keep walking.....we are getting on a SAFARI VAN! Fantastic! Our drive to Mwalagange Elephant Safari in the Shimba hills is a few hours long but there is so much to see! There are screams of Jambo from all directions, especially from the little children! Already feeling very welcome!

Upon arrival we settle into our tents of two people. I hook up with Ann and our love has blossomed ever since. She is very funny and very scottish! After this we are given an introduction chat by Stevie our guide......it is impossible to know at this point how incredibly good he is!
